
Biography
Stina Hellberg is the only harpist in Scandinavia holding a degree in jazz. She performes with various groups and her skills spans from jazz and pop, to classical music, opera and show music. 2009 she has performed with Tomas Ledin and Malena Erhnman (the winner of the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest), participated on Maia Hirasawa's new album and appeared at the Stockholm Jazz Festival 2009 with her group Stina Hellberg: Stories from my Chip Shop.
Stina Hellberg is a Swedish harp player with roots in classical music, who has grown into jazz, free jazz and jazz fusion with influences of the traditional music of Sweden. As an improvising harpist, she has a rich, melodic voice of her own. With knowledge of traditional jazz theory, and a base in Scandinavian free jazz culture, she is breaking new ground for an ancient instrument.
A harpist from age 8, Stina started her career studying with Gertrud Schneider, Uppsala Sweden. She continued her studies at Bollnäs Folkhögskola, Sweden, where she studied with Mattias Windemo (guitar), Gösta Rundqvist (piano) and Örjan Hulten (saxophone).
With full scholarship, she continued her studies at Trinity College of Music, England, where she studied with Gabriella Dall'Olio, Sioned Williams and Imogen Barford.
She left Europe to study at Berklee College of Music, Boston MA, USA, where her harpteacher was Felice Pomeranz. She also studied with David Fiuczynski (guitar), Dave Samuels (vibraphone), Bruno Råberg (double bass) and Fernando Brandau (flute).
Stina has performed at the Polar Prize Awards, Stockholm Jazz Festival, The Volvo Ocean Race Awards, Mejeriet Jazz Club in Lund, Jeriko Jazz Club in Malmö, the Berklee Performance Center, the Generations Jazz Festival in London, Göransons Arena in Sandviken and much more. The companies she has played for include Volvo, Ericsson, SIDA, The Carlyle Group, Statens Järnvägar and more. She also is present on Maia Hirasawas newly released album "GBGvsSTHLM" and is currently working with several recording projects.
Stina holds a degree in jazz from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm.
